  1. Wonderful capture. Great exposure and treatment. Good depth and depth of field…lots to look at. I just wonder if taking two steps to the right to get the whole pickup truck might have made it an even stronger image.

  2. Thanks for the feedback. I’ve come to appreciate a ‘time & space’ feel to this image. Even after realizing that the man is in a painting from another era, I find myself twice removed (via the ‘real’ woman in the foreground) from whatever he is gazing at out the window.

One of the things that I am gladly reminded of when I look at this photo is how the placement of a relevant foreground element can influence an image. Going to a fine arts museum has never been the same since!

The painting by Ralph Ladell Goings, ‘Walt’s Restaurant’, was part of a ‘Still Life: 1970s Photorealism’ exhibition.

  3. So interesting how the lens creates alternative realities. I didn’t see it as a painting until I read the comments. My initial reaction was that if it were in black and white, it would look like something made in the era of Robert Frank—the man sitting at the window, the tableau behind him, the jukebox and pinball machine, and the woman in the foreground looking at him.

  4. Very interesting! I never would have guessed that it was a painting beyond the woman in the foreground.

  5. It’s good that I read all the comments first. Fascinating capture…who ever would have guessed it was a person standing in front of the painting? Certainly not me. My eyes are drawn through the photo by the color of the jacket, the sky and the pick-up. It all looks like it belongs together. Really nicely done.
